New malware appearing in dodgy apps you shouldn't be downloading anyway

Arrrghhh

The next time you're cruising one of the various Android app piracy forums looking for the free crack for ROM Manager or Root Explorer, be warned that you may get more than you're looking for. A new bit of malware named DKFBootkit has been found attached to pirated apps that require root. It hooks itself into the boot sequence by altering files in the system, and can cause all sorts of problems without the user being aware. Since you think it's a legit application, you say OK when it asks for root privileges, and you are owned. It's bad news all around.

The good news is that it's easy as hell to avoid. That's the part of these types of stories that never seems to get mentioned. Use a bit of common sense -- you download a file from someone who is able to crack a legit app and defeat any license checks, and you don't think they can drop a bot or keylogger in there as well? Idiocy like this is what keeps malware alive on Windows desktops, and Android devices. Stop stealing apps, and don't be stupid enough to trust someone who steals and redistributes them. Period. Full stop.

If you didn't pay for it, chances are you'll wish you did. And you deserve it.

Apple has Apple Stores, Samsung has... this!

Samsung store inside Phones 4u
You know those heady dreams of a new Samsung product launch today? Well consider them punctured. There's no new gadget to announce, but instead a teaming-up with UK retailer Phones 4u, offering a dedicated space for Samsung to dip its toes into retail waters. Located on London's Oxford Street -- and just around the corner from an Apple Store -- the shop-within-a-shop displays all of the Korean makers' big hitters, with several tables housing Galaxy Tab 10.1s, Galaxy Notes and Galaxy S IIs. The rest of that expansive galactic family dot the periphery of the room, but then you'd probably come here primarily to test-drive the aforementioned flagships. The tables themselves are dressed down; no pricing or carrier information clogging up the surfaces, just the devices and some Galaxy branding. Samsung's claimed the whole top floor and the shop is already training up dedicated Samsung staff to answer pressing questions like what's the point of the Galaxy Ace Plus whether that phone has Gorilla glass and when we can expect to see a Galaxy S III in the flesh.

Was Jennifer Lawrence Too 'Curvy' To Play Katniss In 'Hunger Games'?

Fan groups respond to one critic's suggestion that Lawrence's 'womanly figure makes a bad fit' for Katniss.

Fans flooded in droves into movie theaters this weekend to see "The Hunger Games." In the wake of the highly anticipated release, much of the criticism surrounding the movie has been not about the young stars' performances, but their appearances.

Most recently there has been criticism of Jennifer Lawrence's weight, with some sighting that as Katniss, a girl who grew up in a famine-stricken district of a dystopian society, she should have been thinner.

New York Times film critic Manohla Dargis wrote, "A few years ago Ms. Lawrence might have looked hungry enough to play Katniss, but now, at 21, her seductive, womanly figure makes a bad fit for a dystopian fantasy about a people starved into submission."

The statement is receiving much backlash, considering Lawrence is now a certified movie star that countless young women look up to. Putting aside the negative body-image issues the comment suggests, one wonders whether Dargis is accurate in her assessment of the actress/character disparity? MTV News asked expert "Hunger Games" fans to weigh in. Most had the same message: They loved what Lawrence brought to her character and that the scrutiny is misguided.

"Katniss may not have been as thin or small in stature as depicted in the book, but it's not unfathomable that her hunting prowess would have allowed her to have some meat on her bones," TheHob.org's Gabby Vittoria responded. She went on to point out that "Peeta wasn't tall in the movie; Clove wasn't big and brawny; Katniss wasn't smaller than most of the Tributes. These physical changes certainly didn't take away from the story and messages in the movie. Besides, for me, Jennifer's acting and the quality of the film makes her weight a non-issue."

Many fans not only disagreed with the film critic but were affronted by these reviews of Lawrence. "I'm offended by this critique on so many levels, and honestly, I was shocked that it was ever an issue and that a professional critic would bring it up in the film's review," Sara Gundell from the Hunger Games Examiner fan site stated.

This backlash about Lawrence's weight comes in the wake of the questioning of Rue's race in the film. The pre-teen is played by Amandla Stenberg, who is African American. In recent days her casting was the subject of racially fueled criticism by a handful of moviegoers who have suffered their own backlash.

MotoGP Bikes To Go To 5 Engines Per Season From 2013, Rev Limit Draws Closer

As talks continue between Dorna and the MSMA over the future of MotoGP from 2013 onwards, some proposals are already looking solid for the future. On Saturday, Carmelo Ezpeleta told members of the Spanish press that Dorna and the factories had agreed further limits on the number of engines allowed for each rider during the season. As part of the cost-cutting proposals, from 2013, the number of engines is to be reduced from 6 per rider to 5.

The engine limits have been popular with the factories, as it has allowed a significant reduction in costs - at least, once the initial cost of developing a longer-lasting engine had been defrayed. So the proposal was readily agreed between the two parties. How this will affect the Claiming Rule Teams is as yet unknown, but as this is the first year of the CRT rules, Dorna and the teams will want to see how the season plays out before making any changes.

Woman drank two litresofvodkabefore carrying out attack

TWO women consumed an "eye-watering" amount of alcohol before beating up another drunken woman in a pub car park.

Bristol Crown Court heard one of the attackers, Jade Hall, had drunk two litres of vodka on the night of the assault at the Beaufort Arms in Stoke Gifford.

She and Toni-Fay Connolly pulled the hair of victim Jane Giles before repeatedly punching her in the head and kicking her as she lay on the ground.

The court was told that clumps of Miss Giles' hair had been pulled back so tightly she was left with a deep 7cm-long laceration on her head and needed 13 stitches.

When police arrived to arrest the two women on August 17 last year, three officers were assaulted.

Single mother Hall, 22, of Syms Avenue, Frampton Cotterell, admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm and battery against two officers. Unemployed retail worker Connolly, 22, of Church Road, Frampton Cotterell, admitted actual bodily harm and battery against another officer.

Kenneth Bell, prosecuting, said the defendants first got in to a verbal altercation with Miss Giles – whom they did not know – at the Parkway Tavern pub in Stoke Gifford.

Miss Giles called the police and went looking for Hall and Connolly once they had left the pub. The court was told the victim found them in the Beaufort Arms and was set upon in the car park – with footage of the attack being captured on CCTV.

Miss Giles said she felt pain in her scalp as her hair was being pulled back and that her skin seemed to be "ripping apart" due to the tension

When police arrived, Hall kicked an officer and swung a punch at another, while Connolly bit an officer's finger.

David Maunder, defending Hall, said his client had consumed an "eye-watering" volume of alcohol. He said she was in a state of distress at the time.

George Threlfall, defending Connolly, said his client had behaved in an uncharacteristic way and was highly distressed by her actions. Judge William Hart jailed Hall for 40 weeks, suspended for 18 months, and ordered Connolly to do 150 hours of unpaid work.

AZ Senate OKs bill to bar abortions after 20 weeks

PHOENIX (AP) ? The Arizona Senate approved a sweeping bill Tuesday that generally bans abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy and institutes disclosure mandates, including one that requires the state to set up a website with images of fetuses at various stages of development for women to view. Arizona already has laws about "informed consent" requirements, a prohibition on a type of late-term abortions and regulations of abortion clinics. The new proposal would require the state health department maintain an extensive website that provides information about alternatives to abortion, medical risks and descriptions and images of fetuses at various stages of development.
